Street Photography Books: Open City & Bystander

Posted by (PF) at 6:34 ...

From the books about Street Photography “Open City: Street Photography since 1950” by Russell Ferguson and Kerry Brougher and “Bystander: A History of Street Photography” by Colin Westerbeck and Joel Meyerowitz are surely mentionable highlights.

“Open City: Street Photography since 1950″ has been published in 2001 in companion to the exhibition of the same title at the Museum of Modern Art Oxford at Hatje Cantz. Beside the worth reading essays of the two curators, the detailed image part of the catalogue with 19 positions of considerable artists provide a nice overview in the development of Street Photography after 1950.

The catalogue starts with photographs of Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, William Klein and Garry Winogrand from and the fifties and sixties. The middle section introduces Nobuyoshi Araki and Daido Moriyama, two Japanese photographers. The color era starts with photos of William Eggleston and Raghubir Singh from the eighties. Photographers like Wolfgang Tillmans and Beat Streuli are shown at the conclusion of the volume.

“Bystander: A History of Street Photography”, a collaboration of the curator Colin Westerbeck and the photographer Joel Meyerowitz has been published 1994 by Bulfinch. The book is dedicated to the history and theory of Street Photography. The book starts with Charles Marvilles old Paris and introduces artist like Andre Kertesz, Paul Strand, Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange.

The final chapter takes the form of a conversation between Colin Westerbeck and Joel Meyerowitz about the latter’s memories of his own early days as a street photographer in New York in the 1960s and his association with Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand, Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander.

Both books are at presently available only second-hand.

Michal Chelbin – Strangely Familiar

Posted by (PF) at 6:24 ...

“The images in this series are an attempt to capture human stories in everyday life, those that exist in the space between the odd and the ordinary. (…) Most of the people I photograph have something in common; they are not the mainstream, and many of them are small town performers (For example, they could be dwarfs in a theatre play, ball room dancers or young contortionists). (…) I try to create a seemingly private moment, one where they are not performing or on stage. The main themes in my work are not social or topical, but private and mythical; I search for people who have a legendary quality in them.” – Michal Chelbin

Michal Chelbin’s book “Strangely Familiar” has an ancient and enchant touch. Michal Chelbin, born 1974 in Israel, studied at the Wizo Academy of Design & Education in Haifa/Israel. Michal Chelbin was born in Israel in 1974. She lives and works in Brooklyn.

Her monograph “Strangely Familiar” is available at Aperture.

Oliver Sieber – Character Thieves

Posted by (PF) at 7:26 ...

Oliver Sieber portrays in his actual book “Character Thieves” young cosplayers from Japan, Canada, the USA and Germany within their personal surroundings.

Sieber concerns here, as like in his previous work, about questions of identity, individuality and their corresponding codes. The costumes of the cosplayers, mostly leaned against characters of Japanese comics (manga) and cartoons (animes), lend identity, obtain strength and create a distance from the world of the adults.

He shows the young cosplayers often in their own (children’s) bedrooms, their (parental) living rooms, or in backyards of apartment houses. In addition to these images Sieber presents dull urban habitats he stumbled across.

Oliver Sieber succeeds to confront the freely selected virtual roles of the cosplayers with reality. The actual intention of the cosplayers, the desire for release and strength, is questioned. Locked up and disoriented the independence of the cosplayers remains refused.

Oliver Sieber, born 1966, studied photography in Bielefeld and Duesseldorf. Examples from the “Character Thieves” can be seen from 09. March to 20. April 2008 in the exhibition “Beautiful World” in Neuss.
