Malte Wandel relates in his thesis “Einheit, Arbeit, Wachsamkeit” to the History of ‘Madgermanes’, former Mozambican contract workers of the GDR.
Even today, 20 years after their return to Mozambique, the majority of this group is not reintegrated in any way; they live in great poverty and fight against the Mozambican government. The GDR gave up to 80% of their pay as pension to the government of Mozambique – money they should receive upon their return to Mozambique.
But the government holds them down and tries to sit out the conflict. The ‘Madgermanes’ don’t get their money from the government.
Zweites Büro, the newly established studio and showroom of Juliander Enßle, Marc Hinz and Moritz Kappen, in Dortmund shows photographs, videos and interviews by Malte Wandel (visit by appointment).

“My project Holon shows the life of communities and radical living individuals, who emancipated from the consumerism and the globalisation of the western world. Lot of them are living completely self-substaining, they supply themselves through the cultivation of wholefood products and live without money, electricity and water conduit. Without a doubt, one of the most fascinating aspects is, that their lifestyle is simultaneously forwardlooking and unprogressive.” – Malwine Rafalski

“Joachim Schmid’s book ‘O Campo‘ is a photographic compilation of football fields in Brazilian cities. The images were taken via satellite and they show the rather oddly shaped football pitches that seem to be built wherever possible – the desire for playing the game has clearly surpassed and ignored the limitations of natural topography and FIFA’s laws of the game.”

“In 1975 Bruce Chatwin wrote in his travel novel ‘In Patagonia’ that Ushuaia is a childless city with residents who cast unfriendly glances at strangers. Today you will find a different picture. Shortly after Chatwin’s visit a free trade zone was established which led to fast urban development. Whereas in 1975 there were 7000 people living in Ushuaia, today it hosts nearly 60 000. Most of them were young families coming North of Argentina looking for work with their children. They are also the reason why I went to the world’s most Southern city. I wanted to know what it was like being young while living at the end of the world.” – Joerg Brueggemann about ‘Mas Austral’
