Karsten Kronas – Heterotopien

Karsten Kronas - Heterotopien

Heterotopien” is about the ever elusive tensions between entities, identities and space in the global cities of today. The basic questions of a modern view on space will be explored, not only geographically, but to expose the viewer with questions of a physical topos and to what extent the body can be seen as a place or space.

“The truth is that anybody can make a photograph. The trouble is not that photographs are hard to make. The trouble is that they are hard to make intelligent and interesting.”

Moritz Frei – Alles wär so klar

Moritz Frei - Alles wär so klar

In recent German photography, there is a certain trend to a very special kind of art photography. Thereby art is often seen as an escape from the traditional sectors of photography and not as a vocation. In a regrettable way there is frequently not observed that in addition to the pure habit of art also a serious commitment belongs to the subject.

Where there is a lack of deep engagement usually not art is produced, but art crap. Art which is created based on the belief that its creation is more important than its consumption.
Seemingly the producers of this ‘almost art’ depend that nobody will notice this. That there is nearly no culture of debate here in Germany and that the discourse of art is quite pallid maybe helps.

Moritz Frei’s work “Alles wär so klar” (Everything would be so clear) uses collected questions from interviews with artists to illustrate in an ironic style the nonsense that can arise when we talk about art.
When we talk complaisant about art crab, this kind of blah is unavoidable.

Eva Leitolf – Postcards from Europe

Eva Leitolf - Postcards from Europe

I’m always impressed by the precision of Eva Leitolf’s work. Now she presents images of her ongoing project “Postcards from Europe“, which deals with the fortress Europe and their victims.

Like in her series “German pictures – Looing for Evidence” about crime scenes of xenophobic violence in Germany, the images are supplemented by short texts with lexical accuracy. – Take a look!

Antonia Zennaro – Down There

Antonia Zennaro - Down There

“The Reeperbahn, the red-light district of Hamburg, is a mile famous for its sin. Basic human drives laid the foundation of this place. Sex-for-Cash, alcohol, violence and freedom were precisely the elements that once gave the Reeperbahn its unique, dreamlike mood, turning it into an alternative society within the society at large.
But titillating and glorious in the past, what is the Reeperbahn today?
The sailors have become a dying breed, the money does not lie anymore on the streets, the old Bars and Clubs are all slowly closing, the “millionaires of yesterday” are struggling and working hard for their beers and cigarettes, today. A world in between times, accessible for everyone but dedicated only to few.” – Antonia Zennaro about ‘Down There’

Sam Samore - The Suicidist

The gray winter weather here in Germany can crash anyone into a deep winter depression. The right time to lean against the heating with a hot chocolate the heater and to read Jean Améry’s “Hand an sich legen” (Attempt Suicide). Those, who would be delighted to look at pictures instead, may flip through Sam Samore’s “The Suicidist“.

Rudolf Holtappel @ Kultur Bahnhof Eller Duesseldorf

The Kulturbahnhof Eller in Duesseldorf shows from 23rd January to 27th February 2011 the exhibition “Rudolf Holtappel – Fotografien”

The Oberhausen based photographer Rudolf Holtappel (b. 1923) is one of the most important chroniclers of the Ruhr. Since the beginning of the 1950s he was working as a photojournalist and theater photographer and is still active as an artist.
After decades of slow decline and structural changes the Ruhr area has tried to show as the Cultural Capital 2010 a new and optimistic image of the region. The exhibition reminds how life has been about 40-50 years ago.
It is based on an exhibition at the Bunker Museum of Oberhausen in 2007, a large part of the images shows this town.

The opening is on Sunday 23rd January at 11.30. On 20th February at 16:00 there will be a conversation with artist Rudolf Holtappel.
