Grace Kim – Love Hotel

Posted by PF at 7:00 ...

Grace Kim

I’m a bit fed up with clean, aseptically images of love hotels, brothels and other sexually charged places.

But Grace Kim’s black-and-white images of love hotel rooms in Seoul are a different story. Her portraits of unmade beds, photographed directly after the departure of the lovers, make perceptible the existence of sweat and other bodily fluids. She is expressing what many other similar projects deny: sex is dirty, archaic and full of beauty.

Grace Kim studied at the International Center of Photography in New York. She lives and works in Brooklyn.

Mike Whelan – Ad-Site

Posted by PF at 7:00 ...

Mike Whelan

I like picture in picture photography. Especially the ubiquitous use of images in urban space is quite interesting and often questionable. The StrayCats-Blog pointed me recently to the series “Ad-Site” of Mike Whelan, who won the best Fine Art Single Image at the New York Photo Festival in May 2009.
The increasing need to cover urban building sites with flimsy utopias says a lot about the society we are living in.

“The catalyst for this project was the increase in new construction works taking place in London and the ‘artists impressions’ of modern utopias, which promise an elevated social existence by living, working, or even just visiting one of these locations. But there is a radical distinction between utopian vision and the social reality which attends the upheavals of regeneration – and which remains out of public view.” – Mike Whelan about his series “Ad-Site”.

Mike Whelan, born in Edinburgh, received a BA in Photography from University of East London. He lives and works in London.

Thomas Wrede

Thomas Wrede’s series “Manhattan/Picture Worlds” shows images of monumental billboards in Manhattan. Playing with reality and conventions of cognition he turns the city into a stage set, vibrant from drama of day-to-day life.

Thomas Wrede, born 1963 in Iserlohn, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Muenster. He lives and works in Muenster.
