Karin Geiger, Leipzig (Heiterblick), 2005, C-Print

Karin Geiger’s conceptual series “Curb Appeal” deals with garage sales in Los Angeles, in which she is interested in the occupation of public area.

The series “In Between” shows photographs of girl’s schools in Canada and Germany in color and black-and-white. The photographs display group portraits in class rooms and break areas, as well as school interior and private rooms of the pupils.
The work uses different concepts of the documentary photography and although the camera viewpoint is very neutral the series is steeped by empathy.

Also Karin Geiger’s later work deals with group portraits in public areas, whereat the focus lies now on the supercharged single frame. By intensive observation Karin Geiger obtains control over the public areas and blows up the borders between document and construct.

Karin Geiger, born 1966 in Dortmund, studied at the academy of arts in Duesseldorf with Magdalena Jetelová and at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver with Jeff Wall. She lives and works in Duesseldorf.
